Tried something.  Turned off Data and Wi fi.   I still could make and receive calls and texts.    Why is this?

No Internet of course.   How long has this been like this?

Hey there @L-P

Welcome to the Community and thanks for your post.

Interesting post! Mobile Data is used to navigate the web and any apps that has a feed of some sort or that needs to update themselves regularly. Phone calls and texts has always worked on a different connection and they are not dependent to one another. MMS (Picture messages) on the other hand will need the data protocol in order to accept the image or to send one via text.

We hope this clears it up and let the Community know if you have any questions.

HI   To carry on the discussion even further.  I always was under the impression one needed a data plan to use phone for SMS or calls.   Its seems Im wrong.  It reminds me of when I used to sell the old bag phones in the 1980s with a EPROM that was programmed manually with a programming device which was basically what GSM is doing now.

So why do providers offer all the phone options when it will work  actually with no Network connection?   Im a old timer that used to sell heavy phones in the 80's...

To make sure there is no confusion, your mobile phone does need a Network connection in order to make/receive phone calls/texts and use mobile Data. When deactivating your mobile data (toggling your mobile data to off in your settings), you're simply removing your phones access to send and receive information via the mobile web (stopping the internet access on your phone).

By doing so, your phone calls and text messages access will not be affected and continue to work as indicated in your mobile plan.
