Port authorization / port protection

Hi,

Could anyone clarify what this means for a virgin account? It looks like from November 2021 Virgin has started doing this, but I am not clear what it means.

I am concerned about the fraud risk with number porting scams, as some bank accounts use sms as a form of 2 factor authorization. I do not want my number to be able to be ported elsewhere without me confirming it on from my current phone.

So, for my number to be ported out, does Virgin require me to make a call / sms from my current phone? Or does it just happen if I don't respond to a text informing me it is happening?

This is such a security risk now, that having proper port protection in place is a major factor in me deciding which cell company to use.

Thanks!

Hey there @Humperdink,

Thanks for your post.

In an effort to reduce wireless number portability fraud and protect Member-information within the industry, Virgin Plus as well as other wireless carriers are moving to port authorization. This means that if you or someone else attempt to transfer (port) your number elsewhere, you will receive an SMS asking you if it was really you that tried to complete the transaction and if you do not respond within 90 minutes or if you reply "NO" then the port request will be terminated and your number/information will remain safe.

Check out Port Protection on our Privacy & Security page.

Thanks, just what I wanted to hear! Might be worth updating your privacy and security page with this info, as it doesn't currently explain what port authorization actually is.
