I am a bit green when it comes to deciding on travel plans. With the data only plan does that mean you cannot make or receive a phone call? Going to Mexico. I think I need these plans explained in layman terms. Also, which one is better?
Thanks

Hey, I have a question about when to activate Roam Sweet Roam. I'm currently in Ontario but am looking to travel stateside in January. Since I don't have data in the US, I was going to get Roam Sweet Roam for two days. The Virgin Mobile website says to text something to a number in order to activate, which is fine. My question is - do I text that before I leave Ontario (the same day I'll be heading to the US), or do I text that once I'm in the US?
Also, once I'm in the US, am I able to re-purchase it for the next day before 12am (say 1130pm Friday for Saturday usage) or do I need to wait until after midnight (say 1201am Saturday for Saturday usage)?
Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

I will be vacationing in Cayman (Zone 1) for 19 days (including travel days). In the past I purchased travel passes for my trips which typically cost $60-ish for limited minutes and data, which I thought was quite reasonable. But of course all major carriers have eliminated travel passes, so now my only option is "Roam Sweet Roam" at a cost of $304 for the trip which is not a cost I can justify.
So I am planning to turn off roaming, and to use Wi-Fi and pay as I go, but it seems information is vague and hard to understand. So I have spent a lot of time trying to research it, and I believe I understand how it all works but want to confirm it all. Please correct me if I am wrong on any of my "facts" below.
I am currently not subscribed to Roam Sweet Roam, and I need to subscribe if I want to use it. Once subscribed it will automatically bill me each day unless I unsubscribe. This can be controlled while on the trip as follows:
- To subscribe / turn it on: text “ROAMHOME” to 6800
- To unsubscribe / turn it off: text “REMOVEROAM” to 6800
I will have roaming turned off. Meaning data is turned off. With roaming turned off, I will still receive and can dial out for voice calls. With roaming turned off I will still recieive and can send SMS. No other data such as map updates unless on wi-fi, etc. So how I think it all works:
- SMS text message incoming - no fee
- SMS text message outgoing - $0.99/message
- MMS messages require data, so will not come through and cannot be sent unless paying per MB fees - not available with Virgin Plus so this is not an option.
- Incoming call, not answered - no fee
- Incoming or outgoing call - $2.50/minute (long distance charges are included in the per minute fee). Cayman to Cayman calls are also subject to this cost.
- Voice message pickup on cell phone counts as phone call. But can call cell phone from land line, during message press # and then password to check messages from land line.
Also ... I am using Google Messages so I can send SMS and MMS via wi-fi as long as RCS chat is turned on. I have read that you have to enable flight mode, turn on wifi, and then send SMS / MMS otherwise it will try to send via phone plan – need to do some testing on this but does anyone know if this is true?
I also plan to use Google Maps offline. So I plan to download local maps in Google Maps, and that will ensure that works without Wi-Fi. GPS does not require mobility connection so works without data at no fee.
Does that all look correct? Any other advice or other thoughts will be appreciated.
