Can someone help me understand why I can make phone calls with my LTE Pixel watch 2, but not text?

Odd, when my phone (pixel 7 pro) is off or out of range of my pixel watch 2 I assumed that I could call and text from my pixel watch 2, but I only seem to have the ability to call, not text.
Is calling somehow supported, but not texting when your phone is out of range?

I guess I misunderstood what I could do with my pixel watch when out of range of my phone.

To confirm, are you able to send and receive text messages from your Pixel watch as you would normally when you're within range of your phone?

Additionally, when you're away from your phone, is it still powered on and connected to mobile data?
