Amber Alerts

I always keep my phone (Alcatel) turned off (by pressing the red lower-right-corner key until it turns off) because I'm often in situations where having it make any noise could be dangerous for me. I turn it on only when I need to make a call out, then turn it off after.

Today there was a "national test alert" in Canada, and it started blasting away even though my phone was turned off. It kept going until I opened my phone, found it had been turned on somehow and was demanding I press the OK button to stop it.

What can I do to ensure my phone is 100% quiet when I need it to be?

Hi @john,

Welcome to Community.

While turning your device off is the best way to eliminate all notifications (SMS, Calls, etc.) it is important to know that the emergency alert will follow your device settings:

  • The volume of the alert will be the same as the set volume on your device at that time.
  • If your device is set with a reminder feature, this may cause the alert to repeat until you acknowledge it.

If your device is set to silent or “do not disturb” mode, the alert may be hidden with other notifications.

I found the reminder feature and was able to turn it off. Thank you for that.

I can't find any 'do not disturb' option in settings.

I can't find any way to delete messages either - I get as far as a 'confirm delete' screen with options at the bottom of the screen to select ignore or deletre, but nothing I do selects the delete option on this screen. I've gone through the user manual so many times I lost count and can't find a thing about it.

I finally found how to set the loudspeaker symbol on the home screen with an X on it and how to set the phone to vibrate only (again shown only by the home screen symbol). If we get another alert, I'll find out if it works. (It didn't help that I have three buttons on the right side of the phone whereas the owners' manual only shows one...)

Glad to hear you have sorted the features/functionalities on your device and thanks for keeping us in the loop @john.

I live in Manitoba and did NOT receive an Emergency Alert Regarding the Mass Killing in Saskatchewan Sunday September 4/22. I wonder if any other Virgin user didn't get the alert either.

I do not receive amber alerts on my galaxy s20 fe5g. someone else in same house with virgin does. Why? I tried asking this in chat but it just keeps going to different screens with no answers. is there a hidden setting because amber alerts is turned on
