I have never been able to get my Valerie modem to connect to my desktop PC using an ethernet cable. I have tried using different ports and different cables in case one was damaged, but this did not fix the problem. I can connect other devices to the internet using wifi but I do not have a wifi card in the PC. Any suggestions to troubleshoot before I resign myself to buying computer parts?

Hey there @Person5678 ,
Welcome to the community and thanks for your post.
I understand your frustration with your Valerie modem not connecting to your desktop PC via ethernet. Let's troubleshoot this before you consider buying new parts. Since you've already tried different ports and cables, we'll explore other possibilities.
Here's a step-by-step troubleshooting guide:
Check the obvious:
- Modem Power: Is the Valerie modem powered on and showing lights indicating it's connected to your internet service provider (ISP)? A solid power light is a good start, but look for other lights indicating connection status (often labeled "Internet" or similar).
- Ethernet Cable Connection: Carefully inspect both ends of the ethernet cable. Make sure it's firmly plugged into both the modem's ethernet port and the PC's ethernet port. A loose connection is a common culprit.
- PC's Ethernet Port: Is the ethernet port on your desktop PC enabled? Check your device manager (in Windows, search for "Device Manager") to ensure the network adapter is recognized and enabled. If it's disabled, right-click and select "Enable device."
Network Settings:
- IP Configuration: Your PC might not have obtained an IP address automatically. Try manually configuring your IP address. You'll need your modem's IP address (usually found on a sticker on the modem).
- DNS Settings: Incorrect DNS settings can also prevent a connection.
- Firewall/Antivirus: Temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus software to see if they're interfering. If this resolves the issue, you'll need to configure your security software to allow the necessary network connections. Remember to re-enable them afterward!
Advanced Troubleshooting:
- Different Ethernet Port on PC: If your PC has multiple ethernet ports, try a different one.
- Different Ethernet Cable (again): Try a brand new ethernet cable to rule out any cable issues completely.
- Test with Another Device: If possible, try connecting another device (like a laptop) to the Valerie modem using an ethernet cable to see if the problem lies with your desktop PC or the modem itself.
