IP Location

My IP address says I am located in Toronto despite living in another city. When trying to watch sports, it says there is a blackout in my area (which is because it thinks I am in Toronto). My neighbour has a different internet provider (who has the correct city for his IP address)  and the blackout is not in effect for him so this is obviously the issue. After 40 min on the phone with Bell/Virgin Tech support I was told the IP is static and it cannot change. Does anyone have a solution for this or do I need to change internet providers?

I am experiencing the same issue. Has this been resolved?

I was told that the IP address is static and cannot be changed to locate me properly.

Enough is enough... I work in the tech field. I have been working NOC departments for over a decade, so I know how easy it is to assign a set of IPs to a geographic location. I am up in Sudbury and having it show Toronto makes online shopping sometimes impossible. I can't continue to work like this either you fix your geo locate or I am switching to the other fiber provider we have which isn't Bell. When I go to a website like Best buy I want to see stock on products I need from my store not Dufferin.

Thanks.

hello,

I am from Ottawa and recently just switched to Virgin internet back in January. since switching to Virgin, i am unable to watch the local news. I am from Ottawa and my CTV app displays Toronto News. Further more, i looked at my IP address and clearly states "Canada, Ontario, Toronto" as the location. Virgin, can you please adjust this asap? i'd like to watch local news.

Thank you

There's a thing called iGaming, and it is for Ontario folks to play games online. These specific sites that are for gaming online for ONTARIO-ONLY players requires ALL players to allow geolocation. So, basically, we cannot play if we cannot show our location.  OR we cannot play if our IP is not in ONTARIO, even if we ARE in Ontario.

That is my problem in a nutshell: I live in Kingston, Ontario and my IP does not show that. It shows Ottawa, but MOSTLY it shows QUEBEC. This is not going to work well  with this geolocation software, and I have been locked out of a site because my location is showing as Quebec.  This site is a site that has MY money, and now, because of this geolocation problem, I cannot do anything - not even withdraw my funds.

There has GOT to be a way to have a more accurate reading of one's location. I am getting very annoyed with this - it's a serious problem, and I would think that there would be a solution to this problem but NO, there isn't (so far).

Is there a way for one to get a more precise location, otherwise, this is a really terrible service - it is impeding on the enjoyment of using this internet, as I am now LIMITED as to what I can do.  Is there not some kind of compliance which would enable the clients to be properly geolocated? Thanks.

Similar to JiP, I am in Ottawa and am unable to watch local news. My IP is currently showing Lefroy, ON but has shown as Windsor, Barrie, Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener to name a few when I have unplugged it and reconnected. I was on the phone with Virgin today and they ultimately said it was my TV that’s the problem. That just sounds ridiculous to me. Ironically, the only local Ottawa news I’ve seen in 5 weeks since changing to Virgin was when I was out of town!  Please also send me a private message and solve this issue.

I have worked in NOC departments for several isps and I can tell you right now that the problem has a very easy solution. All the company has to do is build a database which they should be able to do with their already existing billing software that places customers in the specific cities that they live in and then assigns an IP block to that specific city and then those customers would only pull an IP address from said city. It's really easy to do and Eastlink, Vianet, Teksavy, Bell all have this properly configured. I've explained this to Virgin technicians multiple times and they keep telling me that it's not possible and it's not that it's not possible. It's that apparently they need to hire a better NOC person...

I believe that the only solution for this problem is from all of us to report this to the crtc because according to crtc law they should be doing this.

Thank you, Tyrlando. That sounds much more logical than what Virgin advised me. I will definitely consider a report to the crtc. Unfortunately, in the meantime I will be considering cancelling my Virgin service and going back to paying more for a service that works.

I am also quite disliking this "blockage" of my internet use, I couldn't for the longest time figure out why my shopping was always in Quebec, when I am in Kingston Ontario, and it makes sense now.

IP location not accurate for my Ottawa address so I get blacked out in my sports app as my IP is GTA
